Is it time to upgrade our school buildings?
Make your voice heard!

In April, a citizens’ advisory group recommended that Portland Public Schools upgrade its school buildings through a construction bond. The school district is considering the committee’s recommendation and wants to hear from you.

Families, teachers, students and neighbors share your opinions:

• Should the school district put a school construction bond before voters?
• When is the right time to take a bond to voters?
• Which schools should be upgraded?
• What kinds of building improvements do you want to see in schools?

Offer your feedback at one of three meetings:

Tuesday, May 22 – Roosevelt High School Cafeteria, 6941 N. Central St.

Wednesday, May 23 – Madison High School Cafeteria, 2735 N.E. 82nd Ave.

Thursday, May 24 – Lincoln High School Cafeteria, 1600 S.W. Salmon St.

Each meeting will start with an open house from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. followed by a presentation and discussion from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The district will provide free child care and interpretation services in Spanish, Somali, Chinese, Vietnamese and Russian.

The citizens’ committee– called the Long Range Facilities Plan Advisory Committee – that made the recommendation to pursue a bond has been meeting since December to learn about PPS buildings and suggest options for long-term improvements. The nearly three dozen committee members include business leaders, educators, engineering and construction professionals, representatives of other local governments, parents and community leaders.

In June, the school board will consider feedback from the May community meetings along with the committee’s recommendations and then determine next steps.
